The core of WiX is a set of build tools that build Windows Installer packages using the same build concepts as the rest of your product: source code is compiled and then linked to create executables in this case. But for others, Fleet is still in its infancy, it is promising and it could take a few more years before it can compete with VS Code. The WiX toolset lets developers create installers for Windows Installer, the Windows installation engine. If the pricing comes out to be cheaper than other IntelliJ IDEs, it sure can bring in some of its users to Fleet. It is a lightweight redesign of the JetBrains IntelliJ platform with a high focus on remote development.

The goal of the fleet is not to kill VS Code, but to unify JetBrains IDEs into a single frontend powered by JetBrains’ many language servers. But Fleet is a great product for existing JetBrains users. JetBrains Fleet is a promising product but it is going to be an uphill battle to gain some market share from vscode let alone kill the actual product. Because many independent developers never want to spend money on something like Fleet when they know can get a superior product in VS code for free. This could be a huge turnoff for many.Ī paid product like Fleet can never compete with VS Code. Fleet is currently free only for “ Hobby and Education” but as for professional use-case, it will be a paid product with prices yet to be announced. It is hugely supported as an open-source project backed by Microsoft. VS Code is free, well-maintained, and has a lot of plugins. This is a really good plus point for Fleet. Others can join a collaboration session you start on your machine, or everyone can join a shared remote development environment. You can share terminals and debugging sessions, conduct code reviews, explore the code, and do a variety of other things with no setup. Fleet allows for far more than simply sharing the editor. With Fleet, you can collaborate on code with others. You can also get full IDE features in vs code via plugins, but with Smart Mode, it all happens automatically.

It’s a cross between a lightweight text editor and a full-fledged IDE, though indexing a project appears to take a long time, possibly more than a minute.

Because these features necessitate indexing the entire project, it’s nice to have the option to opt in only as needed. When you click the Smart Mode button at the top, the editor transforms into a full-fledged IDE with features like autocomplete, refactoring, and so on.
